課程概述

College and university libraries (commonly referred to as "academic libraries" in English speaking countries) are an important type of libraries that are at the frontier of institutional and technological innovations in the library world. This undergraduate semi-seminar course will use a mixture of instructional methods including lectures, panel discussions, films, field trips, self-directed research, etc., to guide you through the professional world of academic librarianship. By attending and fully participating in the course, you will:
(83dc) Understand the basic principles of academic library administration.
(83dc) Gain in-depth understanding on selected issues in academic libraries.
(83dc) Understand the concerns and trends in the academic library community.

課程目標
You are required to work individually or in pair for your term paper. This term project is an opportunity for you to explore and investigate a special topic related to academic library services or resource management (see the following box for possible topics). You will present your study findings in the class and write a term paper on the topic.
In oral presentation, you must prepare a very concise and informative handout for your classmates (2-3 pages, including an annotated bibliography of the best resources on the topic.) Each presentation may last 30-45 minutes depending on the number of projects we will have. Your presentation will be graded on its content, organization, and clarity..
Your term paper should be 20-25 pages (double-spaced) in length excluding tables, diagrams, and bibliography. Use APA style for your writing and citations. You will be graded on the academic strength of the paper and the wellness of your writing.

Topics for Your Term Project:
(83dc) Services
(1) Document delivery; (2) Public computing (public access computers); (3) Information literacy instruction; (4) Information Commons; (5) Web-based services.
(83dc) Resources
(1) Electronic resources (fee-based & free) management; (2) Physical collection management; (3) Course reserves management; (4) Open access movement.

(83dc) Topics other than those listed above are possible. But you must first persuade the instructor of the importance of your proposed topic to gain his approval.

課程要求
(83de) Attendance & Participation
Attendance is mandatory. Follow the university rules to request an authorized absence from the class (http://host.cc.ntu.edu.tw/sec/all_law/4/4-10.html). Except in emergency all unauthorized absences will cause penalties and will result in your point loss. Remember the instructor has discretion over your request for absence; failing to attend a class meeting after the instructor declines your request will cause a penalty.
Please note that class attendance is not equal to participation. Silent/inactive participation may negatively affect your grade. Active participation includes (but not limited to) raising significant questions or sharing ideas/opinions/comments/critiques in classroom discussions or in the CEIBA forums; being responsible and responsive to your teammates in oral presentation teamwork, etc.

(83de) Classroom Behaviors
Enthusiastic and constructive discussions and debates are strongly encouraged. Please, however, be a civilized participant and respect other people’s opinions. Please cooperate with the instructor to enhance the classroom dynamics for all of us. Please avoid disruptive behaviors (e.g., cell phone use, noise, etc.); serious disruption may cause point loss for your attendance & participation.

(83de) Penalty for Overdue Assignments & Re-dos
All overdue assignments will receive a penalty based on the seriousness of overdue:
(83dc) Overdue for less than 24 hours: 20% off your original grade.
(83dc) Overdue for 24-48 hours: 30% off your original grade.
(83dc) Overdue for more than 48 hours: you will receive zero point for the assignment.

Please note that extension of deadlines will be given only under special circumstances (e.g., family emergencies). Remember that the instructor may decline a deadline extension request; it is your own responsibility to pace yourself and show good management of your study project.
Also note that the instructor may decline to grade an assignment that fails to follow the writing/formatting instruction or is of extreme poor quality. If you receive a “Re-do” for an assignment, you must re-submit a revision by the new due date given to you, and your second submission will receive a 30% deduction of the original grade that assignment deserves. No point will be given if you fail to turn in the second submission on time.

(83de) Academic Integrity
Offenses of academic integrity (e.g., plagiarism) will be punished according to the university’s rules as in http://host.cc.ntu.edu.tw/sec/All_Law/4/4-08.html (國立臺灣大學學生個人獎懲辦法).

(83de) Email correspondence & CEIBA
The instructor may use emails to contact you about course-related matters. Group emails will be sent out via the CEIBA system. Therefore, it is your own responsibility to list an email address which you regularly check in your CEIBA account. The instructor will also post course-related information on CEIBA forums. You are strongly encouraged to use the CEIBA to communicate and share course-related ideas, comments, and resources. Active participation in CEIBA counts toward your course participation. Please be a responsible cyber citizen and be considerate to the other participants (e.g., post all your test messages in the TEST board; include subject lines and choose the right destination for your posting, etc.)

Instruction for Writing, Formatting, Printing & Submission
Unless specifically instructed, the following instruction applies to all written assignments. Failures in following the instruction may result in point loss; serious flaws may cause re-dos.

(83de) Writing
(83dc) All written assignments should be written in standard Mandarin Chinese or English. Please be grammatically correct and avoid misspelling/typo errors. Too many grammatical, typo, and other language use errors may result in re-dos.
(83dc) Remember you are now an academic writer. The primary goal of academic writing is to report and communicate concepts and ideas. As such, your writing should be concise, readable, and capable of expressing sophisticated ideas in an analytic and articulate fashion. Serious conceptual and structural problems in your written assignments may result in re-dos.
(83dc) Some rules of thumb of academic writings include: avoid very long and complicated sentences; make good use of punctuation marks; paragraph a long text; use headings and bullet points very carefully (norms vary across disciplines); use tables and graphs strategically, etc.
(83dc) You must cite the source(s) if you employ others’ ideas or quote an author in your writing. Use APA style. Failing to acknowledge the sources of ideas/quotations is a serious academic offense. Copy and paste a whole paragraph from someone’s writing to yours as if you write it yourself is also a form of plagiarism (even you cite the source); it is a serious offence.
(83dc) Respect the restrictions of text length (very important). Serious excess or insufficiency may lead to point loss or re-dos.

(83de) Formatting
(83dc) All written assignments must be typed up using a computer word processor (e.g., Microsoft Word or other text editors) and the layout set for A4 papers.
(83dc) Print your name and student ID number at the upper right corner.
(83dc) Layout: the text should be printed horizontally (left to right); the printout direction of the papers should be set as vertical.
(83dc) Margins: the four margins of the papers should be set as 2.5 cm.
(83dc) Use double spaces for all your writings..
(83dc) Fonts: except headings, use Times New Roman for all English texts and 新細明體/標楷體for all Chinese texts (size = 12).
(83dc) Page numbers: all written assignments should be numbered at the lower right corner.

(83de) Printing & Submission
(83dc) All written assignments must be printed on A4, white papers (single-sided).
(83dc) Staple your paper at the upper LEFT corner. There’s no need to over-decorate your paper.
(83dc) Submit all your written assignments to the instructor’s cabinet drawer at the Department Office. You MUST ask the Department Office staff to sign and date the submission date/time on your paper if it has been overdue by the time you turn in. Do NOT turn in your paper in any other way (e.g., leave it at the instructor’s office door, mail in, etc.). Failure to comply is considered non-submission and you will get zero point for that assignment.
(83dc) Also email an electronic copy of your written assignments in PDF or RTF format to the instructor for documentation purposes (the same due date/time).
